Gosforth Bohemian Development 1-8 North Shields CC
Northumberland Minor Cup 4th Round
Saturday 11th February 2023

The Northumberland Minor Cup reached the quarter finals stage yesterday.

Away wins for Newcastle East End and Willington Quay Saints over Heaton Stan 'A' and Hexham respectively, along with Newcastle University 'A' beating North Sunderland at home to reach the semi-finals.

The other tie was the game I watched at Kenton School, where the two lowest ranked teams met as North Shields CC, faced a very young Gosforth Bohemian side.

North Shields Community Christians was established in 2004, playing in the North East Christian Fellowship League Premier Division and are the current champions. The club is based at Walbottle Campus, but this match was away on the lumpy grass pitch at Kenton School. The large complex also has a 3G pitch, which was already in use, with a game taking place there when I arrived.

Shields have beaten Northern Alliance sides Bohs Reserves and Rothbury to reach this stage and booked their semi-final spot with an emphatic win, taking a 3-1 lead into the break before hitting five unanswered goals in the second half. This team will fancy their chances in the last four and look a good bet to reach the Minor Cup final.

North Shields CC 3-2 Willington Quay Saints

Saturday 11th March 2023

North Shields Community Christians made it to the Minor Cup final in a cracking semi-final with Willington QS. They took a two goal lead in the first half with Luke Parker heading home from a corner kick, before striking a lovely shot from the edge of the box after half an hour.

Although they were behind, Saints had the best of the first half and should have been back in it before the break. Joe Connor was brought down in the box but the penalty kick from the centre-forward was well saved by the 'keeper. (bottom pic)

The visitors took their chances in the second half, with Connor again winning a penalty, but this time he took it himself and scored, then he unleashed an unstoppable shot twenty minutes later to make it 2-2.

Saints looked set to go on and claim the victory, but with time running out it was the hosts who won it. The match was looking towards a penalty shoot-out, but a quick break from Shields saw Matthew Agar spot the 'keeper off his line and chip home the winner for the underdogs.

The other semi-final saw Newcastle University A beat Newcastle East End 4-1 on penalties following a draw, which sets up an interesting Minor Cup final at Whitley Park later in the season.
