Worsborough Bridge Athletic 1-4 Retford
FA Vase 1st Round
Saturday 10th Octoiber 2026

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic returned to Park Road in February 2016, having been forced to play at Grimethorpe and Maltby Main from September 2015. I visited the club during that nomadic spell at Grimethorpe Sports Ground in December that year, which you can read about here along with the club’s potted history.

It's over ten years since that visit and The Briggers had remained in the NCEL First Division during that time until this season, going up to the Premier Division after finishing league runners-up last term.

The Rotary Community Pavilion has the changing rooms at the side with a refreshment room at the front, with standing room to watch the game from an elevated position.

The main stand sits on the half way line with brick team benches built in at the front. On the opposite side is a covered terrace, where spectator access ends just past the half way line, with the top end of the ground out of bounds, as it's part of the cricket ground. At the rear of the Briggers Bar are picnic tables and there's further terracing along the side.

This is the first time since 2010 that Worsborough Bridge have reached the First Round proper of the FA Vase, but they couldn't progress any further as they were well beaten by Retford.

The visitors took a controversial lead, as there appeared to be a foul on the ‘keeper before Jarosz slotted the ball in. This sparked off bother with a fight breaking out amongst some spectators, which resulted in the match being suspended for fifteen minutes.I feared an abandonment, but the players finally came back onto the pitch (after the main culprit left the ground) to play out the remaining ten minutes of the first half.

In the second half Retford bosses it, adding three more goals before a late consolation for the hosts.

A nice day out in Barnsley, where I visited the town's GBG pubs which I hadn't been to before. Alcoholic refreshment was partaking in Spiral City, George & Dragon, Nailmaker Tap 2 and Heaven & Ale. After the bevvies I caught the number 2 bus on Sheffield Road, which stops outside the ground. My reverse journey was spot on with everything running smoothly all the way home.
