Hetton Juniors 3-1 Ferryhill Athletic
Wearside League 1st Division Challenge Cup - First Round
Saturday 18th November 2023

Another chance to see a match at a new venue following another fixture switch to a playable pitch. Hetton Juniors moved their Cup tie with Ferryhill Athletic to Hetton Lyons Country Park. Hetton Lyons was named after the landowner - John Lyon, who was the Great-Great-Great Grandfather of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The park features a water sports lake, fishing lakes, orienteering course, play area and is also part of the national cycling network. There are two full size football pitches with the changing rooms down the stairs at the end of the Hetton Lyons Industrial Estate.

Ferryhill took an early lead when a ball from the left was met by a first time shot which was well saved by the goalkeeper, but Adam Morland was on hand to net the rebound, even though he looked suspiciously offside.

Hetton turned the tie around, equalising when James Byrne was on hand to tap in, after a corner was headed towards goal, then five minutes later Jordan Southern raced in to net the rebound after the ‘keeper made another good save, which made it 2-1.

Just before half time the referee threatened to abandon the match after a Hetton fan took exception to a late tackle on the home goalkeeper. His abusive and over the top  behaviour towards the Ferryhill manager saw the referee having to calm things down on the touchline.

This entertaining cup tie continued to sway back and forwards in the second half, with Hetton finally settling the tie with fifteen minutes left, when Jake Pratt rifled in a left foot shot to book their place in the 2nd round.

Hetton Juniors 3-1 Deerness Valley
Wearside League Division 1
Saturday 2nd September 2023

Hetton Juniors senior team are playing the majority of home fixtures this season at South Hetton Cricket Club. The local parish only allows the pitch to be used once over a weekend and as it's also the  home of  Sunday league team Easington Lane, they'll host matches here if there's no weekend fixture clash, otherwise they'll play at Hetton School. It’s exactly 3 years to the day since I ticked that ground off.

South Hetton is a former mining village in County Durham situated 6 miles east of Durham and 7 miles south of Sunderland..The football ground is on the other side of the cricket pitch, with changing room facilities. The welfare also has a bowling green, tennis courts and a 5-a-side court.

Hetton Juniors made it three wins from their opening three Division 1 fixtures with a convincing victory over Deerness Valley. They were two goals ahead in the opening fifteen minutes courtesy of a first time shot from Jake Bowman and a volley from Ryan Taylor. The visitors hit back with a good finish from Ben Medland, but Hetton quickly restored the two goal cushion with Jordan Southern firing in the third.

Both teams had plenty of chances after the break, but surprisingly the second half remained goalless.

Polton 1-1 Hylton CW
Wearside League Division 2
Wednesday 2nd June 2021

Polton AFC are the reserve side for Northern League club Billingham Synthonia. They joined the

Wearside League at the start of this season, playing home matches at Ayton Drive in Redcar. In April

the club relocated to Dorman Long Athletic Club in Middlesbrough after their home pitch was

vandalised by locals. After a couple of fixtures they've moved again, recently playing at

Acklam Green Centre, and here at Acorn Sports Centre.

A very competitive match with Hylton CW ending all square, but the hosts could have won it. The

visitors were awarded a penalty in first half stoppage time after a daft push on the striker by the

Polton ‘keeper, who made amends by brilliantly saving the resulting spot kick.

Lewis Graham fired Polton into the lead, but they were pegged by a sterling overlapping run and

decisive finish by Jack Curry. Polton missed loads of good chances late on and... (as their manager said) are desperate for a good centre-forward.

I headed back down the A19 ten days later, to tick off the other ground which Polton AFC have used in Acklam this season.

The match against Hetton Juniors at Acklam Green Centre was the final fixture in the Wearside League this season. The ground has an enclosed 3G cadged pitch, which is in regular use within the community for six-a-side soccer.

Polton finished off their season securing a fourth place finish, with three goals in the final quarter of the game. They took an early lead when Mat Marshal headed home from a corner, before Steckles-Young latched onto a free kick to equalise with nicely taking volley.

The hosts regained the lead with a skilful run and finish from Keiran Gellatly, then added to their tally when Ben Henderson finishing off a good passing move. A 20 yard effort from Henderson completed the scoring and rounded off a satisfying first season for Polton in the Wearside league.

Hetton Juniors 3-3 Sunderland West End & University
Wearside League Division 2
Wednesday 2nd September 2020

Hetton Juniors Football Club was established in 1996, providing a platform for local kids to be coached and play competitive matches. The club run teams from under-7s to under-18s, and have added a senior team to play in the Wearside League Division 2. They are based at Hetton School which has a huge plot of land with several pitches, with the senior team using a roped off pitch nearest the school building.

Hetton Juniors kicked off their first ever Wearside League in a very entertaining game, on a horrible wet night against Sunderland West End & University, getting off to a great start when Sam Nye got on the end of a corner kick to knock the ball in from close range in the fifth minute.

As the half progressed West End improved with Elliott Howey firing in the equaliser, before an overlapping run and lovely finish from right back Abdull Karim Ali Abdullah made it 1-2 with half an hour gone.

The home team's most impressive player Joe Hassanin equalised in the 57th minute, but the visitors regained the lead minutes later, when a shot from Stafan Rosca crept in at the far post. The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 67th minute which was calmly converted by Connor Hayes-Smith to make it 3-3, then both sides had chances to win it, but overall the draw was a fair result.
