Sorry to miss Keegan as I think they covered his absence up to get a decent home contingent in .always had a soft spot for the geordie fans and loved gazza as a player even with his issues . The fans were banging on the doors of fish and chip shops and pubs before 8am in the town.

We caught a bus over (7.5 miles) but the kids on the back seat were giving the away supporters in cars the fingers. Rather nervously we got off the bus at the Peacock pub on Leeds Red. We were surrounded by Newcastle fans straight away. We tried to escape but they stayed with us. We though we were in for a real beating up. But no, all they wanted was to get in the pub. We ran around the back followed by this group of away fans. We got to the back door and was let in by what we thought was door staff. They were Newcastle fans. I think the others got in as well. We thought we were walking into a pub of Town fans. We were about the only town fans there. There could have been some in the other room, but it was too busy to find out. We got our drinks and stood at the bar looking scared. But soon enough the Newcastle fans got us singing anti Leeds songs. They were fine with us to be honest. The game went as you said. Then I made my way back to Cleckheaton. There were Newcastle Brown bottles and cans littered all over the town, just to remind me of what had just taken place.
One moment of the game I remember was some banter. It could have gone badly wrong. It was in the ground and the Newcastle fans sang "we've got more yobs than you" town fans have a strange sense of humour and replyed with "we've got more jobs than you". Lucky The Newcastle fans laughed it off.John Alan Ramsdennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31627570.post-14418530140446613422020-11-22T17:29:54.189+01:002020-11-22T17:29:54.189+01:00Cheers to you, We learned something new.
