 Penistone is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. (population almost 23,000) The name appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, as Pengestone and Pangeston. The town is situated on a high ridge, which is believed to be the source of its name, although it has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names because it contains the word… (whisper it) penis.

Penistone Church FC formed in 1906 after the merger of Penistone Choirboys and Penistone Juniors, initially played in the Sheffield Amateur League.

The Worksop defence held firm and pinched it in injury time, when Steve McDonnell was tripped in the box and Matthew Sykes converting the spot-kick.

After the final whistle tempers flared and hand bags were swung, resulting in 4 red cards. Brett Lovell, Sam Scrivens (Penistone) Kyle Jordan and Michael Trench (Worksop).

Following the Steel City Derby Academy fixture at Middlewood Road, I partaken lunch at The Rawson Spring (JDW no.382) Had a good bit crack with a few Wednesday supporters, plus on two occasions someone who I’ve never ever seen before stopped to say hello, so obviously my doppelganger is in Hillsborough.

13 miles north up the A61/A629 to Penistone, arriving 30 minutes before kick-off. Great little club with good numbers supporting them.

Back hyem by seven bells after 118 mile drive back north.

Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire, described as “the gateway to the Peak District National Park" It is the highest elevated market town in England, about 1,000 feet above sea level. (population over 22,000)

Buxton FC were formed from the local cricket club, playing their first match on the 27th October 1877. The Bucks joined the Combination in 1891, before switching to the Manchester League in 1899. The club re-joined the league after WW1 and were league champions in 1931-32.

Buxton originally shared with the cricket club, then on to Cote Lane, London Road and Green Lane before moving to the Silverlands, the highest ground in the country in 1884.

First match - 1st November 2-0 win v Bakewell in the Derbyshire Cup.

All the amenities are in the corner next to the turnstile entrance, including a fair sized lounge bar. The classic style main stand was built in 1965, which houses the dressing rooms. The original seats were later replaced with sky blue ones from Maine Road. The opposite side is fully covered with a shallow terrace and includes a couple of dozen seats at one end.  There is a spacious covered terrace behind the top goal with the bottom end left open.

The Bucks just didn't turn up for this game, going behind after 20 minutes, when a shot from outside the box was helped on its way by William Jones from close range. Just before half time, James Foley converted a penalty to put Witton 2-0 ahead and well on their way to bagging the points.

The visitors bossed the second half with Foley grabbing his second, before a skillful run and shot from Daniel McKenna made it four on 71 minutes. A miserable afternoon for Buxton was summed up in injury time when Joshua Meade slammed the ball into his own net to make it 5-0 to Albion.

This visit to Buxton was another one of our UK ale trail weekends. We spent Friday in Halifax, then headed onward to Buxton on Saturday morning, taking the scenic route through the Peak District to arrive at our hotel at noon. The pubs were supped in were…  WyeBridge House, Railway @Buxton, Cheshire Cheese, Old Sun Inn, Ale Stop, 53 Degrees North, Old Hall Hotel, Buxton Tap House, before finishing a good night out in the Red Willow.

 Wombwell is a town near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. (population of over 15,000) The town name originates from "Womba's Well", or "well in a hollow”

Historically the town has had a number of football clubs. The first to represent the village in the FA Cup was Wombwell Town in 1896, who won the inaugural Yorkshire League in 1899, before folding in the 1900s. Wombwell Rising Star F.C. briefly played at the beginning of the 20th century and Wombwell FC formed in 1920, playing in the Midland League and dissolved in 1934.

The second Wombwell Town were three times Yorkshire League champions before calling it a day in 2000. Nowadays there are two teams in the town - Wombwell Main play in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League and newcomers Wombwell Town, the third reincarnation of “Town”  formed in the summer, joining the same league in its 2nd Division.

The football pitch is surrounded by a running track with a covered terrace on one side. The clubhouse and changing room block is at the entrance behind the goal. There is half built dugout with a pile of breeze blocks piled up for another on the far side, which is roped off close to the pitch. There is four sets of floodlights on each side.

The Wellers have won all eleven games since their formation and they kept up that 100% record with a cup win over New Bohemians.

They  broke the deadlock on 26 minutes with two goals within a minute from Luke Exley and Luke Norbury scoring straight from the restart. Ryan Smith smashed in the third on 33 minutes before the visitors replied, when a good run down the left set up Wilker Sousa to make it 3-1. Just before half time a ring wing cross from Powell was met with a lovely turn and volley by Norbury.

New Bohemians improved in the second half and got back into it with a 25 yard effort from Callum Saunders. Elijah Lewis tapped in a third on 83 minutes to make it a nervous finish for the hosts, but Super Wombwell hung on to claim their place in the quarter-finals.

Departed Katie’s at 3.30pm arrived at the ground at 7.10pm.

Refreshment stop off in Wetherby at The Crown, Mews Ale & Wine Bar, Black Bull and Red Lion, while my fellow travellers went for a sitty-doony fish & chips tea at the Wetherby Whaler.

Nice surprise to be welcomed  by Nick and Alan Percival (100FgC squad #3 and #40) who played a part in the club's formation. Alan produces the programme and does the media outlets, if fact he does everything except play for or manage the team.

Also in attendance was Groundhopping Godfather Chris Berezai with Spooky(he senses when a goal is about to be scored)

Durham and Wearside Development Division

 Following a meeting in December last year, it was decided that the Wearside League and Durham Alliance League would merge. The Durham Alliance League would then become a feeder league for the Wearside League and would be known as the Durham and Wearside Development Division.

The nine founding teams are Durham United, Farringdon Detached, Seaton Carew, Sunderland North, Sunderland Town End, Wheatley Hill Working Mens Club, reserve teams from Durham City, Jarrow and Washington, plus today’s hosts -  Hylton Sports Club. The club made their debut in the Durham Alliance last year, finishing fourth in their inaugural season.

The complex is easy to find just off the A1231 road towards sunderland town centre. The ground is at the bottom of the complex next to Hylton Colliery Cricket Club pitch, with the pavillion used as changing rooms. The pitch itself is fully railled with a set of cupboard type dugouts at one side.

The home team raced into a three goal lead with just over ten minutes gone, with a clinical brace from #9 and the #10 wriggled through a static defence for the third. By half time 
Paul McComb had completed his hat-trick to make it 5-0 and take Jarrow Ressies goal difference to -100 for the season.

After the break  Neil McNulty also grabbed his third of the afternoon on 50 minutes, before a bit of a mini revival from Jarrow, with a header from Ryan Stobbs and a 20 yarder from Ryan Wales. Moments later normal service was resumed with Dylan Jardin rifling in from the edge of the area, before Jamie Jardin got on the act with a quick double to make it 9-2.

There was still time for a Daniel Steff to latch on to a long ball for his team’s third and to make it a round dozen for the afternoon.
